Urban Arrow Family Cargo Bike Review: The Ultimate Car Replacement?

Today, we’re exploring one of the most iconic cargo bikes on the North American market and my daily ride—the Urban Arrow Family. This Dutch-designed front-loading cargo bike has built a reputation for its versatility, high-quality engineering, and ability to replace a car for many families, including mine.

Why the Urban Arrow Family Cargo Bike?​

The Urban Arrow Family is one of the most popular front-loading cargo bikes (bakfiets) available today. Its modular design, spacious cargo area, and smooth handling make it a top choice for families and urban commuters looking to ditch their cars.

Having owned three different versions over the last seven years, I’ll go through everything you need to know, including design, capacity, motor system, accessories, pros and cons, and my personal experience.

Design & Build Quality​

The Urban Arrow Family features an aluminum frame paired with an EPP foam cargo box, which is lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant. This design keeps the bike stable while carrying heavy loads, as the weight is positioned low between the wheels rather than over the rear wheel.

Key Design Features:​

• Wheel Setup: 20” front wheel, 26” rear wheel
• Step-Through Frame: Makes mounting and dismounting easy, even with kids or cargo onboard
• Steering Mechanism: Controlled via a metal steering rod, providing precise and stable handling
• Suspension: No built-in suspension, though a suspension seat post can be added for extra comfort
• Great Accessories: The ability to carry 3 kids, a car seat, and a great rain cover sets this bike apart

This bike’s low center of gravity and long wheelbase make it incredibly stable, even when fully loaded. While the handling may take a bit of practice for new riders, it soon becomes second nature.

Cargo Capacity​

The Urban Arrow Family has one of the highest weight capacities for a consumer cargo bike:

• Total max capacity: 250kg (550 lbs), including bike weight
• Front box max load: 125kg (275 lbs)

This spacious front box can comfortably accommodate:

• Up to 3 kids
• 1 adult or a couple of dogs
• Additional cargo on the rear rack (such as another small passenger or panniers)

E-Bike System & Drivetrain​

The Urban Arrow Family is powered by Bosch’s eBike system, available in four different configurations:

Bosch eBike System 2 (BES2)​

1. Performance Line Motor – 65Nm torque
2. Cargo Line Motor – 85Nm torque

Bosch eBike System 3 (Smart System)​

1. Performance Line Motor – 75Nm torque
2. Cargo Line Motor – 85Nm torque, upgraded display, brighter lights, and Gates belt drive

Other drivetrain features include:

• Enviolo Heavy-Duty Rear Hub – A continuously variable transmission (CVT) that allows for smooth, stepless shifting
• Bosch PowerPack Battery – 500Wh or 545Wh battery (with an option for DualBattery setup on the BES2 version)

These motor options provide excellent support, making it easier to haul heavy loads, climb hills, and ride longer distances without sweat.

Riding Experience​

Riding the Urban Arrow Family is like gliding or surfing once you get used to the handling. It’s surprisingly maneuverable for its size, thanks to its low center of gravity and relaxed geometry. However, it’s not a sporty ride. It’s designed for stability, comfort, and carrying precious cargo safely, which is exactly what most families need.

The one-size-fits-most frame, combined with an adjustable stem, makes it suitable for riders of different heights, though it may feel large for smaller riders.

Pricing & Availability​

Urban Arrow bikes are sold exclusively through dealers, and pricing in the U.S. ranges from $5,999 to $7,999, depending on the motor and features.

One downside? There aren't a ton of knowledgeable Urban Arrow dealers, especially if you don’t live near a major city. If you’re considering buying one, I highly recommend finding a dealer for a test ride before deciding.

Pros & Cons​

Pros:​

Cons:​

Premium price point but worth it for what you get
Limited dealer network harder to test ride

My Experience After 7 Years & 3 Urban Arrows​

The Urban Arrow Family allowed me to be car-free with 2 young kids in Colorado and now car-light with 3 kids in North Carolina. It’s incredibly stable, handles well in all weather, and has some of the best cargo biking accessories.

That said, there are a few things I’d love to see improved:

• Updated accessories (especially the seatbelts/straps)
• ABS braking option for safety
• Locking kickstand for extra security

Despite these minor drawbacks, this is the only cargo bike I’ve found that can handle my massive 11% hills with a 10, 7, and 2-year-old under a rain cover when I don’t want to drive to school.

Final Verdict: Is the Urban Arrow Family Worth It?​

The Urban Arrow Family is hard to beat if you’re looking for a reliable, stylish, and versatile cargo bike that can truly replace a car. Yes, it’s an investment, but it's one of the best choices for families who want a more sustainable, active lifestyle.
