That's understandable - definitely not ideal with a neighborhood next to it. Just getting more sunlight on the ground helps a lot with biodiversity so that's good!
Man, that's rough. I don't really have any advice other than the more people that complain and rally against it the more likely something will change. Writing an op/ed seems like a good idea.

Although it takes some work, the best solution to deal with squirrel type stuff is to desensitize them through training. I've done it with my dog. It takes some time, but it's easier than desensitizing your dog to other dogs 😛 (my dog is reactive to other dogs 😩).
Glad to hear there are places where it's pretty good and that it's improving! That does seem to be the case in more cities now - plenty of work needed but pretty solid in spots.
