Grew up in Florida 1/2 a mile from any paved surface, learned to bike in a basement.
Raced for a little bit when I was 13-14, and again in college in "Beer-Bike", never that fast, but got good at riding rollers and bicycle repair.
Biked on-and-off to age 46, was tired of Bush's oil war, not happy about my middle-aged blood chemistry, started biking to work a few days per week. Didn't like backpacks, didn't like how a "normal" bike handled with panniers, decided to try an Xtracycle FreeRadical extension, and was hooked. Also, my blood chemistry got way better at 50 miles per week, so, guess I have to figure out how to bike in the winter. 18 years later, here I am.
Most of my experience is with longtail bikes, have a couple of mini-velo bikes capable of carrying stuff. I am now at the age where I need to manage getting-old issues. I have a low opinion of the mainstream US bicycle industry, I think they are doing everyone a disservice in their bicycle designs and overly recreational orientation.
