I'm an elementary school music teacher in the Capital Region. I also sit on my municpality's Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) that comments and gives feedback on proposed road designs, which is both an incredible experience but also depressing at times. I only just got a cargo bike two months ago but already am in love with it. It's a Frankenstein import conversion by a local (Phil, who is awesome). We got it mostly so we could go places with our dog without the car, but also so we can shop and transport stuff without the car either.
Still trying to commit to riding the 50km round trip to work and back more than once a week, but that's a tall order. I do it every day during my school Go-By-Bike weeks (which I organize) and it is exhausting even on an e-bike. It's not easy to ride before and after dark every day, including in (protected) lanes on a stroad, though our network is fantastic. Hoping to move further into the city in the coming year, cutting back our car usage even more, walking more, and getting us out on our bikes more!
I have a mission to replicate an adventure that Phil did, which is to put a solar panel on top of the cargo box (as a roof for the dog) to make it a partly-self charging bike, and do a nice long bike trip - Southern Vancouver Island has some of the best bike infrastructure in Canada outside of Quebec, both local and interregional. You can bike on almost uninterrupted dedicated infrastructure all the way from Saanich to Lake Cowichan, a distance of close to 100km, as well as from Saanich to Sooke Potholes (about 30km). I'm also hoping to get to the Gulf Islands this coming summer both on my sailboat and by taking the cargo bike out to the ferry with a trailer for camping gear.
See you out in the protected bike lanes that are springing up at breakneck pace around the CRD!
