How does the display estimate range?

We just bought a used gen1 GSD chain-drive. When I shift the Purion display between ECO and TOUR, it adjusts estimated range. For example, today with a 400wh battery maybe 80% full, it displayed18 miles of range on TOUR. Obviously, it doesn't know how fast I'll ride, how hilly the route, that I have studded tires, or how much cargo I have.

I rode 10 miles (with 1k feet climbing... fairly flat) at 15-17mph, and ended with 5 miles of range. So actual consumption was maybe 30% higher than it predicted.

Does anyone know if the range estimate is based on a fixed speed, like 20km/h (12.4mph)? Or does it adjust as it gets to know the owner's typical speed?

To partially answer my own question: the Purion manual says after about 1 mile of riding, it factors-in riding style (unclear if it's just using speed, or extrapolating from the watt-hour consumption per mile). So, that's pretty cool.

From what I've heard on the forums and seems to fit riding a GSD myself, it goes on the consumption over the previous 5miles. I live at the top of a hill so I always have a pessimistic prediction first thing in a morning.
