Secure Bike Parking Hack For Apartment/Condo Folks

Clever move, especially if you can get a van that cheap.

One flag, our strata (and fire code in BC) would require any vehicle parked in a parkade to have storage insurance. Probably $30 to $50 a month. That said, if you have the right coverage it might pay for your bikes if they're stolen from the van.

Exactly why I mentioned one needs to do research specific to your own situation.

Sean, this is awesome that this works for you. Is your van always at-the-ready to move in the event of snow clearing?
In the condo we lived at, all vehicles had to be registered and insured. (you can’t have one with you other in Manitoba), and the vehicle has to fit in the assigned stall.

We are recent (new to us) homeowners, we have a 14 x 19 single car garage, which is not secure at all, but we installed an 8‘ x 5‘ 18 gauge steel galvanized barn door storage shed. The bikes go inside it and get chained to the foundation with hex link chains and have motion alarms on them. The door is also alarme. the batteries come out for winter.IMG_2738.jpeg

It’s a great hack if you can get away with it. I looked at getting a van to use as a bike storage unit, but the requirements here are that vehicles have to be inspected, registered, and insured. That made it way too expensive and complicated.

I looked into putting some sort of shed or storage container in my assigned parking spot and couldn't figure out a rule-abiding way to do it.
I like the van idea if it works for you. Would be hard to get e-bikes in and out and I think all vehicles have to be registered here.
