Alvin over at Velo reviewed the Tern Quick Haul Long. Give it a read here!

Pros

  • High cargo capacity for its weight
  • Huge accessory catalog to tailor the bike to your needs
  • Least expensive way to get a Bosch Cargo motor

I am curious how the Vello SUB compares to Tern’s market. It seems like the SUB shares a lot of features with Tern’s niche and is sort of a mix between the Quick Haul on size and the GSD in capacity/components

As a Quick Haul (short) rider, the 'con' of "Rougher ride than the competition" is valid, though the front suspension can be a PITA to maintain in a wet/snowy climate which is one of the reasons I didn't choose a GSD when I was comparing models, especially given the nicer price tag of the QH and it being my first e-bike when I bought it. I just ordered a suspension seatpost to make the ride a little less bumpy, even though I mostly ride in an urban setting where the only bumps are kerbs without ramps. For the price and the quality, the QH is an amazing bike. I do occasionally wonder about upgrading to a GSD someday, but I love my QH.

The trade-off is availability, accessories, and longer-term viability

That last item has me worried, is the SUB not good long-term? In reading up it looked rather promising and like a little light-weight alternative to the GSD
It’s unknown. Any brand that is less than 5 years old is concerning as the industry resets itself.

Vello bike company is over 10 years old (founded in 2014). They started with folding bikes like Tern and came out with their first cargo bike. I think the SUB is very innovative in it's class. It has a high load capacity, is very light (admittedly without suspension), and comes with dual battery pre-wiring. It can be folded to fit very narrow spaces (foldable pedals and stem).

Thanks that’s some helpful context. It might ultimately be a question of what is more important- suspension or light weight. Does that seem fair?

Yes, agreed. I was looking at the GSD as well but still no smart system was a big no. The lack of suspension also reduces maintenance issues. I actually ordered a fully decked out SUB with the new 3x3 NINE gear hub. I expect delivery in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the additional context. It has been in the US for less than a year, I believe relying on bike shops for ordering.
