The Aventon Abound is one of the few direct-to-consumer cargo bike we feel comfortable talking about, thanks to the UL-2849 testing, and there are 1000s of Aventon bike shops across the United States.
The Abound is an electric midtail cargo bike that uses a hub drive motor, so the rear hub is where your power is. This is a unique sensation as it feels like the bike is pushing you a bit from the back. The major con to a hub drive system is that if you truly get into riding cargo bikes, the hub style can wear out much faster than a mid-drive motor. If you are looking to test out the cargo bike water or on a tighter budget, this is a great place to start as long as you can keep your rear rack carry under 143 lbs.
This bike is labeled a Class 1 and 2 because the throttle can be removed.

Technical Overview from Aventon
The Abound ships as a Class II eBike, with pedal assist and throttle. The Abound will also operate with the throttle unplugged and removed, should you want to ride in an area where throttles are prohibited. Aventon ebikes are built to the IPX4 water-resistant standard. IPX4 means that your bike is resistant to water splashes from any direction. This means it’s OK to ride your ebike in light rain. It won’t be harmed by spray from a wet road or raindrops. Your ebike is not intended to be exposed to prolonged rain or submerged or subjected to a pressurized spray. Don’t use a pressure washer or sprayer to clean your ebike. *Using PAS 1 throughout flat terrain with a rider weight of 160 lb.
